A University Map Just Grew A Brain

And there are innovation + marketing lessons for every business in it.

University maps used to be the definition of dull. Static PDFs, faded printouts, pins on a screen. Tools you used once, then ignored.

Sam Houston State University decided that wasn’t enough. They rolled out world’s first features for the campus. Last week they launched Engage byDisrupt — and in doing so, turned a utility into an experience. Not just “where’s the library?” but “what’s the story of this place, how do I get there with ease, and what can I discover along the way?”.

That shift — from function to experience — is the playbook every business should be stealing. From shopping malls to airports, zoos to theme parks, the lesson is the same: navigation isn’t just about movement. It’s about connection and engagement.

Lesson 1: Functional ≠ Finished

Most organisations treat functional tools as background noise. Websites, apps, service desks, maps — as long as they “work,” they’re ticked off the list.

SHSU didn’t settle for functional. They saw the future. They reimagined their map with AR Vision overlays, 360° Smart Tours, and accessibility-first navigation. Suddenly, a tool that was once ignored became something people actually want to use.

Now picture the same idea in a mall, where directories become discovery engines for stores. Or at an airport, where gate maps guide you with live updates. Or in a zoo, where AR brings animals’ hidden stories to life.

Takeout: Whatever industry you’re in, look at your most boring touchpoint. That’s where the biggest opportunity usually hides.

Lesson 2: Innovation is Community-Powered Co-Creation

Here comes the clever bit. SHSU isn’t even keeping the name. Students are voting on what to call the platform. That move turns Engage byDisrupt launch into a shared moment of ownership.

It’s not just adoption, it’s belonging. When people feel like they’ve shaped the tool, they’ll stick with it.

Zoos already know this trick — fans who get to vote on a new habitat or a newly born baby animal name become die-hard advocates. Malls and theme parks can do the same. Give your visitors a say, and you don’t just earn users. You earn champions.

Takeout: Stop building for your audience. Start building with them.

Lesson 3: Spend Once, Amplify Twice or More

Most businesses would’ve squeezed this product launch into a single announcement and moved on. SHSU’s smarter. Launch first. Naming reveal later. Two waves of engagement from one investment.

Airports, malls, and attractions miss this all the time. They open a new terminal wing, unveil a new precinct, cut a ribbon… then the buzz dies in a week. But play it like SHSU and you stretch a single project into multiple news cycles. And that’s smart marketing with a Seth Godin seal of approval, surely.

Takeout: Plan your campaign launches like a series, not a one-off.

The Bigger Picture

Engage byDisrupt isn’t really about maps. It’s about engagement: take the ordinary and make it extraordinary. Make it useful but also make it joyful and meaningful.

For SHSU, that means a university map that guides, teaches, and builds community. For a shopping centre, it could mean a store directory that entertains and sells. For a zoo, an overlay that turns a habitat into an interactive conservation story. For an airport, a tool that eases stress and gets people where they need to go, even picking up some goodies along the way.

The lesson is simple: the most forgettable parts of your customer journey are the places you can create the most unforgettable change.
